I do have to say I wouldn't trade this western life for anything. I love the smell of sage after a good summer rain, the feel of a colt just learning how to turn back a cow, the sounds of bawling calves and yells for the iron. I'm most comfortable in a good set of chinks and my worn out boots, with the sound of my spurs scuffing the barn floor. My saddle is my choice of seating compared to a spot in an Opra hall. My make-up is made up of the dust from following a few hundred head of cattle. My jewelry is made up of silver from a bit maker and my best peice is hanging in my horse's mouth with a floral tooling only a cowboy could admire. My favorite books are not printed yet told by a few buckaroos while having a high-ball after a day of branding. I'd rather see myself to the ground of a round corral coming off a bronc-y colt than sitting in a classroom hearing what has or is to happen after I experienced what I prefer to. Hearing from an old horse trader.."You have to be a lady before your a cowboy"..I do believe he was right. There's always a place for a little glam in your life. You just have to find your calling and which hat looks prettier...

First Time Calvers

I really can't remember being tiny anymore. I'm 8 1/2 months along and am cherishing the lil moments my lil "calf" pushes me around, awaiting the day of his arrival. We've been calving heifers for about 3 weeks now and seeing the new lil babies run around after they've been on the ground for a few days is adorable. Had to help pull some calves this past week and it hits me afterwards that, "Hell, that could be me!" Giving those new mamas words of wisdom and watching my baby's dad sweet talking 'em, trying to help all he can to get them to push and give their babies the first wiff of fresh air. I think and imagine the day this one comes and can't wait to see how he reacts, maybe a huge smile or even tears. I'm getting very anxious!
We spent the day yesterday at the Takacs ranch, the friends and family branding and a couple heifers calving on the side. Watched our friends kids sled and play in the 14 inches of snow that we dont have at our own place. Made me want to join in and sled or rope, didnt even make me feel pregnant when I'm jumping out of the gate when a mad yearling wants to take us out. Until we joke a bit and "decide" its best I not walk out in the pen where the ground has softened and muddied because I may "sink" as Mr. Gary had said. I just laugh with it because its better we get humor at the presence of my swolleness. To me its a blessing and I probably joke about how much I've grown more than anyone else. So much has been going on these past few weeks and I am very excited to join the first time calvers, to meet this little tike and cherish the little moments of his first breath and movements in our arms. Until next time..Take care!
